From what I understand the horse has bolted. Tarquin may be in a position to confirm but I’ve read reports that the useful parts of the refinery have been dismantled & shipped to India to be used there.
Pipes have all been filled with concrete. Never be useful again.
Apparently that’s not true. I also believed it for quite some time until it was pointed out the pipeline belongs to Wiri Oil Services ltd commonly known as wossle around these parts. They are totally separate to the refinery and run the pipeline and tanker filling station which is across the road from the refinery. Without that pipeline and distribution centre in Auckland there would be hundreds more tankers on the road. The coastal tankers are still running but I think that is contracted out to some Indian outfit. Basically the refinery is an unloading port a lab and a tank farm now days.

The shareholders in theior wonership capacity decided they no longer needed the gear. That’s their perogative as shareholders.

I think not.
The issue is that some of the shareholders no loonger trade in NZ and other companies were bypassing the refinery anyway. Gull for example imported all their product from other places.
At the end of the day the company was losing money as it was a toll operation and so the shareholders did what they are entitled to do.
A refinery for 5 million people is not viable especially as it was not suitable for refining the oils recovered from NZ wells. We were importing the crude needed and exporting our crude elsewhere.
Most of the refining equipment is being sold offshore, hasn’t happened yet but it will. Interestingly I hear there is a bit of a dispute going on with Northport, not sure what it’s about but I hear stories of a dickhead refinery manager trying to give Northports management a hard time. Would be funny watching them truck half a refinery to Auckland to put it on a ship. Classic dumb refinery management. I also have it on good authority that if the oil companies had been allowed to increase their take by 5 cents per liter the refinery would never have shut. It is worth remembering the refinery puts out a lot more than petrol, diesel and avgas. Bitumen, sulfur, carbon dioxide, oils and a heap of other products will now have to be imported and the site will never be used for anything else – far to much contamination that nobody talks about.
I agree to a point Viking but I think the refinery was a critical piece of infrastructure for the country and I would have supported the Government buying it (back). They should have got it cheap — a lot less than the cost of dismantling it. It is a common “practice” in the oil and gas game. A big company thinks it has got all the economic oil or gas it can recover, so they sell to a much smaller company who with lower over heads think they can keep it going economically. So the big guy sells it for a pittance to avoid the cost of capping the well.

For a start it was economically successful for decades so the 5 million is not relevant. Many refineries around the world, were struggling at the time including in Aussie. The Aussie Government took the view they were too important for them to go so they supported them. As I understand it the refining business has picked up again.
When Ruapehu Alpine Lifts went into Voluntary Administration last year, there were two bidders for their assets, Whakapapa Holdings and Pure Turoa.
The Government and Cabinet in June agreed to support these two organisations to purchase the assets of Ruapehu Alpine Lifts.
But, but, but, skullduggery abounds and now the Taupo IWI, Tuwharetoa, are almost certainly likely to take over the whole mountain and assets of RAL. It seems the previous two bidders which the Government approved and backed, have been shown the Dunny door and will not get control, but I bet the Government will almost fully fund the IWI’s control of RAL’s former assets.
Both Whakapapa Holdings and it’s Directors and Pure Turoa and it’s Directors, especially Whakapapa Holdings Directors, had considerable experience in the running and management of skifields. One does have to ask though, what experience does Tuwharetoa have in running a skifield. Absolutely none. I bet a dollar to knobble of goatshit that within a short period of time Tuwharetoa are back at the Governments begging bowl, looking for more funding and a rescue package.

Apparently, since the last fiscal update (released with May’s Budget) business tax revenues have collapsed. Government debt is sky rocketing.
We won’t know the precise extent of the challenges New Zealand faces until Treasury are required to open the books on 12 September. That is when the “Pre-election Economic and Fiscal Update” (PREFU) is to be published.
Put it this way: Back in May Grant Robertson was the guy happy to boast that he was only borrowing one billion dollars every fortnight.
One billion is one thousand million. Every two weeks. It is the equivalent to a $508 fortnightly credit card bill in addition to the higher costs of living.

Why is the Government promoting State dependency?
That money could be used to subsidize 100,000 new jobs in the market place, which would result in an increase in the Government’s tax take. Quite logical to some.
