A British battery company has developed an electric car that can be charged in just five minutes, in a step towards solving the lengthy plug-in times that frustrate EV drivers.

Viking, if you can charge an EV in 5 minutes (actually 6), that means the peak output if 10x battery capacity.
[1] The charger for the Nyobolt is 350kw. A charging station of 10 cars will have a peak demand of 3.5MW.
[2] You will not even be able to run cables under the forecourt concrete at those currents. So it will have to come in at very high voltage, and step down at the charger.
[3] Many small power schemes, have outputs less than that. In Queenstown if would soak up the entire peak output of the Roaring Meg Upper and Roaring Meg Lower power stations.
Mind you, 3 converted NZR DL series Locomotives parked next to the EV charging station could work. Either that or an 4 hour wait, while EVs are slow charged and powered by Huntly coal.
Looks like a good make money situation just popped up, put a 350kva gen in a box on a truck and drive around as a emergency ev charger for those stuck on the side of the road, you could charge double or triple the rate of the normal chargers and would most likey have a backlog of wankers to get to
350kva is around 470 HP. So it will be a trailer with probably a 600HP diesel or bigger, with a generator.
Callout fee would need to be quite a few hundred to make it viable.
Oh well in that case buy a ramp truck, be cheaper to stick it on the bed and drop them off somewhere, but hell bet the driver of the ramp truck would have a fun time gloating about fuel to the gloomy self absorbed ev drivers
That’s a lot of grunt required. Your average logging truck or milk tanker on NZ roads would be between 540 & 600HP.

The vans are fitted with lightweight EV chargers which, in 20-25 minutes, will enable enough charge to drive up to 10 kilometres so AA Members can reach their home or a nearby charging station if they break down on the roadside.
So maybe 2KW-3KW, for a total charge of 1-2 KWHR to get you home or to a nearby charging station. A far cry from 350KW.

When sizing electrical demand, it is not the average kw demand that is important with capacity calculations, it is the peak demand that must be accommodated at any one time.
If you install 10,000 fast chargers, you have to allow for the fact that all 10,000 could be used at the same time or put in place restrictions, either in charging, rate, number of chargers used at one time, and the consequent queue of cars waiting to get charged. A bit like McDonalds offering $1 Big Macs and chips, through the drive through in less then 60 seconds. Nice idea but physically impossible.
You cannot install 10,000 chargers without the possibility of them all being turned on at the same time.
That is if you don’t want to impose slow charging, or make customer wait in a 12 hour queue because they can only switch on 1000 fast chargers at the same time.
10,000 fast chargers at 350kw = 3,500 MW. or 3.5 Gigawatts.
The entire peak electrical generation of NZ is just over 5,000 MW (5 Gigawatts), with most being in the South Island.
Family Roadtrip:
Charging Time: 6 minutes.
Waiting time (queue): 8 hours.
Kids asking for ice creams, lollies, snacks, and parents getting multiple coffees waiting and the entire family having lunch and dinner while waiting. Having to book an overnight motel while waiting in queue. Priceless.
For everything else there is Mastercard. (which will get used quickly and frequently under these circumstances)
Add in losses of transformers, cables etc and you are looking at more like 4MW. They had better get on and build a few more power stations to power the short lived dream that is ev’s
