In the ‘olden days’ a stay at home mum would have been an excellent choice for a Finance Minister because she would have a background in budgeting. Unfortunately, not a skill that appears to be valued these days.

Abandon hope ye of the Waikato. You’re all doomed!

And how do I know this? I read the wafflings of the climate scientists as interpreted by the child reporters of The Herald.

From https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/climate-change-hamiltons-rare-february-heat-streak-could-happen-most-summers-by-2070/F4FPEQMFLFFTRGU7PBQAF2OB5U/

  • Over a sweltering 15 days last month, maximum temperatures in Hamilton never fell below 27C.
  • It was a once-in-a-decade event in today’s climate – but scientists calculate it could be occurring in three of four summers by 2070.
  • They warn cities and the primary sector need to prepare now for a hotter future.

Fire & brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers & seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes!

Sorry. Got a bit carried away there. 🙂

FWIW: Lest it be thought that, because it’s a group of islands, ‘North African’ temperatures could never happen in NZ, I live in the Waikato and have found that (And after careful monitoring over several Summers), on cloudless summer days, the back- yard temperature on my property is at least 50 deg C and probably higher as ‘store-bought’ thermometers ‘Only’ reach 50.

Such high temperatures are actually nothing new, being recorded since the late Nineteenth Century, and as a result NIWA’s declaration of a drought for the area comes as no surprise.

Naaska, if they want to see what hot is, try Taumarunui in the height of Summer. Ooohhh, they did and found where they had placed the MetService Weather Station close to town showed the temps here were often well into the mid 30’s on a constant basis.

So what did MetService of the day do, moved the Weather Station 10 kilometers out of town into a rural area (where few people reside) and resited it on the banks of a snow feed river (the Wanganui River) and behind Dave Allen Car Painters premises on the outskirts of Manunui. This definitely distorts on the low side, the actual readings that Taumarunui receive.

I have seen the Temps here between 36 Deg and 39 Deg but MetService and NIWA show it as high 20’s.

Hottest months in NZ 1934 and 1935

Unread post
 by janewaystv » Sat 17/06/2006 10:37
October 1934 was a very mild month with temperatures being well above average.

November 1934 was a remarkable month. It was almost continuously warm and resembled a summer rather than a spring month. There was little wind and sunshine was much above the average. It was the driest November experienced for many years, especially in the South Island.

December 1934 was even more remarkable than November. Not only was it the warmest December on record, but the average departures from normal over the country have never previously been equalled in any month. Again there was continuous warmth and an absence of wind. Many places had the greatest amount of sunshine ever recorded in December. Almost everywhere else the month was drier, even more so than last month.

January 1935 was the hottest ever experienced over the country.Rainfall was very much below the average over most of the country. Temperatures were well above the average with many days recording extremely high temperatures.

February 1935 saw temperatures well above average, however good rains terminated the drought which had been experienced in most districts.

March 1935 was a very satisfactory autumn month with continued warmth and lack of storms and strong winds.

April 1935 saw mild conditions prevailing and there was again an absence of severe storms.

May 1935 saw temperatures being below average, the 1st time in 6 months.

The warm earth temperatures in the 1930s alleviated some of the pain of the great Depression. For People sleeping rough/swagmen it was not as cold.
less heating fuel required.

and the 1940s were cold .
Temperatures fluctuate.
Simple fact that climate simpletons cant get .

the early 1970s were hot in NZ
in Australia the 1960s were hot and there were regular bushfires, more than today.
Many many times the smoke could be seen over NZ
I have only seen it twice this century.

Thanks rol,

I recall talking to an elderly gentleman when I was a kid, when our teachers were talking about NZ going into an Ice Age in the 1970’s.

He said that was all a repeat as it was in the news papers circa 1923-24 when he was a kid, that an Ice Age was coming.
Years later googled & found some of those 1920’s newspaper Ice Age articles
But the old fella said they had one of the hottest summers in the following decade of the 1930’s.

And I recall taking special note of the temperatures during the school Christmas holidays, 1969-70 as it defied what the teachers were saying.
Not once during the night, early mornings did the temperature go below 80 F that is 26.6667 C & it soared to much more during the rest of the day.

The weather always seems to confound the supposed experts.

Peat fires are still occurring in the Waikato (It’s part of the aera’s ‘charm’) and in many cases have been burning for decades.

I am advised that many will never be put out as there is simply not enough water available for the job, and so such fires are regularly monitored and appropriate action taken if a threat is perceived.

On that basis, the ‘Peat pong’ is likely to remain a feature of the Waikato for many years to come…

A successful rancher died and left everything to his devoted wife.
She was a very good-looking woman, and determined to
keep the ranch, but knew very little about ranching, so she decided
to place an ad in the newspaper for a ranch hand.

Two men applied for the job. One was gay and the other a drunk. She
thought long and hard about it, and when no one else
applied, she decided to hire the gay guy, figuring it would be
safer to have him around the house than the drunk. He proved to be a
hard worker who put in long hours every day and knew a lot about
ranching. For weeks, the two of them worked, and the ranch was
doing very well.

Then one day, the rancher’s widow said to the hired hand, “You have
done
a really good job, and the ranch looks great. You
should go into town and kick up your heels.” The hired hand readily
agreed and went into town one Saturday night. One o’clock came, however,
and he didn’t return. Two o’clock, and no hired hand. He returned
around two-thirty, and upon entering the room, he found the rancher’s
widow sitting by the fireplace with a glass of wine, waiting for him

She quietly called him over to her. “Unbutton my
blouse and take it off,” she said. Trembling, he did as she directed.
“Now take off my boots.” He did as she asked, ever so slowly. “Now
take off my socks.” He removed each gently and placed them neatly by her
boots.
“Now take off my skirt.” He slowly unbuttoned it, constantly
watching her eyes in the fire light. “Now take off my bra.” Again,
with trembling hands, he did as he was told and dropped it to the floor.
“Now,” she said, “take off my panties.” By the light of the fire,
he slowly pulled them down and off.

Then she looked at him and said, “If you ever wear
my clothes into town again, you’re fired.”

Some more winning by President Trump, in protecting American citizens.

A real “oopsie” from the El Salvador President. 😄
https://x.com/nayibbukele/status/1901238762614517965

Safely received the goods, despite a US Judge giving decrees that the flights needed to turn around and bring back to the USA.

  • “If the Democrats want to argue in favor of turning a plane full of rapists, murderers, and gangsters back to the United States, that’s a fight we are more than happy to take,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Axios when asked about the case.

https://www.axios.com/2025/03/16/trump-white-house-defy-judge-deport-venezuelans

……. The United States will pay a very low fee for them, but a high one for us.

Over time, these actions, combined with the production already being generated by more than 40,000 inmates engaged in various workshops and labor under the Zero Idleness program, will help make our prison system self-sustainable. As of today, it costs $200 million per year.

On this occasion, the U.S. has also sent us 23 MS-13 members wanted by Salvadoran justice, including two ringleaders ……
https://x.com/nayibbukele/status/1901245427216978290

NB Is that the price for 40,000 inmates?
When will our Minister of Corrections look into this savings.
One would think NZ recidivism would rapidly decline if this was put into practice.

New Zealand Judges also follow this concept of “irreparable harm” to allow freedom, bail, so can find new victims?

Judge Boasberg made an interesting — and revealing — comment near the end of the hearing yesterday.

In considering the question if “irreparable harm,” and responding to the Govt argument that Supreme court case law says “deportation” is not irreparable harm — if wrong you can reapply for admission — the Judge said “But they aren’t going to some resort in El Salvador, they are going to a prison where TDA [gang] members aren’t safe” — according to the complaint.

He compared that to the harm to the President’s Authority from an order of short duration that he keep them in ICE custody and not fly them out of the country.

This is a typical “feelings” kind of judgment rather than a strictly legal analysis to what constitutes “irreparable harm.”
https://x.com/shipwreckedcrew/status/1901307034517241944

So the Judge does not consider the trade the gangs do, which would be “irreparable harm” to a fresh lot of victims.

Then the same Judge did this.

…… Boasberg with gusto threw the book at Americans exercising their 1A rights on Jan 6 then denied J6ers other constitutional rights to ensure convictions and imprisonment. ….
https://x.com/julie_kelly2/status/1901301015355281568

So the learning keeps on in El Salvador.

This concept has revolutionized the culture in El Salvador to a more peaceful concept.

El Salvador Mega Prisons For Deadly Maras Gang Members | Witness | Gang Violence Documentary

80 to a cell, Talk about double bunks, but here the Bunks are 5 high.

Also interesting how the tattoos are evaluated to what they mean, and how they are checked out.
Certainly makes one consider which way NZ has been tracking, & in comparison to what we figure with gang patches.

It seems that one of the faults is holding the police / army to a daily quota of arrests.
Arrest and then prison can seem to occur while the investigation goes on.
Another part is the delay, often 2 years before there is a hearing.
Justice delayed is Justice denied.
Strangely enough, the same period of time it takes for an arrest & charges to be heard in New Zealand.

It sure may need some tweaking, a bit of a speed ball, but at the same time, not to throw the baby out with the bath water, as those international NGO’s are liable to do.

Perhaps New Zealand could help in these dire mistakes.
Would a NZ Minister of Corrections consider some of this?

As mentioned, the prison there seems to be far from being over crowded, with much more room, and seems to me to be ready to hire wings out.
The whole NZ prison population could easily be taken in, and at a very low cost.
Then El Salvador can more quickly process their own prisoners, and the police do not need to fill quotas for arrests.

A cut and paste of a comment on Good Oil about what is happening in the UK with law changes affecting blog discussions. Luxon will have something similar here soon, the way he is greasing up to Starmer.

“A day or so ago I mentioned that I appreciate the UK Conservative Woman blog. It was a shock yesterday to read, they are pulling back. The powers that be, have led to restrictions like our General Debate or Backchat being stopped immediately and more.
This is Kathy’s (editor) week in review depressing news. https://www.conservativewoman.co.uk/my-tcw-week-in-review-9/
No more Readers Forum from the next day. Kathy is also restricting any posting of images, videos or links on comments underneath articles. The commenters are devasted.
Some excerpts:
.[…]. I am talking about the Online Safety Act, (another great state intrusion into personal freedom), the illegal harm aspect of which comes fully into force at midnight on Sunday. […].
This is the part of the anti- speech war against us, and America too, that JD Vance so rightly charged Europe with a few weeks ago- those increasingly brazen legislative assaults on ‘democratic values’ that NS Lyons discussed on TCW last week.[…].

so a non-interactive blog is effectively killed off.

it withers as it becomes one persons view

NZ media is too chicken to have comments.
They would get called out
but while there is a lot of crap on Daily mail there is some reasonable stuff, they post quickly on events eg within hours of white Island 2019 there was a massive amount of analysis , graphs, stats etc
nothing like it in enzed.

And they allow comments even when they are called out for their own crap or what is clearly paid adverts posing as gnews.

Not interactive is the death knell.

Luxon will have something similar here soon, the way he is greasing up to Starmer.

Then this is a confirmation of Luxon’s view of rule, from Starving Artist’s comment above.
New Zealand stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine.

So will “free speech & expression” will go, as “where Britain stands so we (NZ) will stand” to give a “statesman” feel being in further ‘lockstep’.

Digital broadcasting legislation to include all the social media platforms, to give credit to ACT was stopped, for the time being.

19 May 2024 …… Van Velden has decided not to create a one-stop shop to regulate all media.
But wouldn’t one agency replacing at least four overlapping out-of-date ones be the sort of efficiency the government has been calling for?

“For me, it’s quite clear that this is an extension of the previous government’s work on hate speech law.
Regulating harmful content online poses questions of subjective opinion on what is harmful material. And I didn’t see a need to progress with this work,” van Velden …..
https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/mediawatch/audio/2018938976/media-oversight-one-stop-shop-stopped

And there are a pack of baying hyenas, members in our Parliament among the Parties, that would wish to strip the NZ citizens, as they want more absolute controls.

About lunchtime yesterday a group of protestors were organising a flotilla off Bream Bay to protest possible sand mining 5 Km offshore. I don’t know a lot about this but I do know they turned up at my business a few weeks ago looking for some kind of sponsorship. When I told them I didn’t know enough about it to commit financially they got real snaky and pretty much accused me of being complicit in economic and environmental vandalism. Obviously they left very quickly and were told not to bother coming back. Anyway this thing they planned was all over facebook, all boats were told to line up ready for the cameras and make as much noise as possible to get their point across. Basically it was all very orchestrated. As luck would have it being your local roving reporter I just happened to be out there wiping out fish. I can safely say there were less than 20 boats there and I think most of them were organisers. No film crews from any of our illustrious news outlets were to be seen either. In other words a total fizzer.

The funny part about all this is 5km off Bream Bay would put you around about 3 mile reef which is pretty close to the Parry channel in a line between Bream head and Bream tail. It can get very rough very quickly out that way and your nearest shelter is probably Urquarts bay which mus be 10 km away. Not easy to get too and most of the boats were small. Not a very good place to hold a protest.

even renting to the average family would use council infrastructure more then most air bnbs would. stupid incompetent council has a poor spending problem and needs to reach into others pockets to keep afloat.

The councils have become a place of employment for Enviro, Social Science, and other la la university degrees & diplomas to slide into a variety of clip-board, tick-box, policy wonks.

The hotels in commercial rates would be seem to be paying $1500 per room.
An Airbnb would go up to an impossible $8,000 per room on her numbers.

A number of times these Council’s on basing to the “Commercial Rate” do not provide anywhere near the amount of services for which they charge.
Then they with many others wonder about why it is difficult to create new jobs, new investment into business’s so overall productivity is kept low in NZ.
It has been a hidden way to sponge of commercial, business’s by higher rate.

Another reason why some find it is a reasonable return on investment to buy a house to rent out.
Why would one build with all the policies, permits, consents, disability, ‘ealth & safety’ ground engineering, geo reports, tikanga reports, etc.. then be pressured with other compliance reason with banks, insurance etc..

even without the residential vs commercial thing the way rates are calculated via value is shithouse aswell. a near derelect 3 bdrm fully occupied by a large family pays far less the a 2bdrm next door occupied by a couple of pensioners yet 1 utilises council infrastructure and local public amenities far more then the other.

ive always been a fan of poll tax, its fairest way to do it but the bleeding hearts and bludgers get highly upset at everyone being treated equal and paying their fare unsubsidised share.

even rating on floor area would be better then value, would definately be a more level playing field but i guess youd need a different measure for undeveloped land.

a different measure for undeveloped land.

I recall the days when it was called “unimproved land”, like the council did not provide access so the road was just a metal track & fords across the streams & rivers.

That reminds me now, of the likes of a native titled land, that seems to run under, when ever the those owners bother to pay the rates, with no penalties or previous rate charges are fully forgiven.

If you have “undeveloped land” then the council will call you a land banker, so again will try & find a way to rate more, as then they figure that you are not contributing in more fees, levies, permits, consents etc.. ….to fund their learned degree’ds with rights of on going promotions, with their ever growing empire.

A Poll tax proposal, in a democracy is a real case of the ‘representatives’ being turkeys voting for thanksgiving and Christmas.

So they look to how to skin / rate the live cat another way with less screeching, while reaching for earplugs earmuffs, and turning the sound-box to full “stadium” size & numbers, ‘well being’ “theatre” entertainment volume as a suitable distraction.

…..”the bleeding hearts and bludgers get highly upset at everyone being treated equal and paying their fare unsubsidised share.”…..

All true but those who advocate for a poll tax tend to lose their enthusiasm when pressed to give details about how it could be collected. It was tried in Thatcher’s UK as detailed at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poll_tax_(Great_Britain)#Implementation

#. “The poll tax when implemented encountered a number of administrative and enforcement difficulties. Some renters did not pay, knowing they would have moved elsewhere by the time the bills arrived.”…….

#. “Councils were burdened with the task of pursuing the large numbers of defaulters, many of whom were participating in organised resistance to the charge.”

This in a system where councils control education & housing instead of central government as in NZ. I’m not suggesting that poll tax isn’t fairer but the devil is in the detail.

yup im aware of the troubles but pretty much everyone has an ird number so just collect it via that, boom heres your tax bill for the year you have 12mnths to pay it tough shit if youre a bene bro or baby farmer cough up. yeah dreams are free.

our whole tax system needs an overhaul… well complete dismantled and rebuilt.

i know poll tax would never fly here or pretty much anywhere, its the fairest way so thats the number 1 reason why itll never in a million years come to fruition and why in the case of rates i made the suggestion of floor area instead of value being used to calculate rates.
i just dont see how a property being worth more means they should pay more rates for the exact same services.

Those employed by the state/councils regulate to charge commercial business through the nose. It’s a nasty mindset, anyone in business is therefore rich eh!

Best thing is that users pay. Including tenants’ paying rates.

Look out, naaska is about to have a looney fit.

Please explain how, (given that rent has a rates component, an insurance component, a maintenance component & a massive profit component) that tenants aren’t presently paying rates. Many services are traditionally quoted as an all inclusive figure & domestic rents are one of them.

Take your time & get your facts right. There’s no rush.

homeowner pays rates, tennants pay rent.
a tennant dosent own part of the house because a component of the rent payment goes toward the mortage, same goes for rates.
imo the rates should be paid by the occupier of the house not the owner if its a rental, services benefit those living there not the owner living in another part of the country or china.

The landlord is up for the rates bill regardless of whether he has tenants. It’s a cost of doing business & as such no different to insurance or maintenance.

so tell us again how tenants are paying rates then?

your arguing having a cake and eating it too 🙂
landlords should invoice tenants quarterly for rates.
who pays water bill for those in metered areas?

If the water is metered separately then the landlord can pass on the charges.

But let’s consider a scenario where the tooth fairy starts moonlighting & looks after landlords & rotten teeth resulting in the tenant becoming responsible for paying council rates directly.

Do you agree that the present rates taken on a weekly basis should be deducted from the present weekly rental?

no cuz theyre not included in the rent so why deduct them?

tenants pay rent for the privilege of living in someone elses how because they cant afford or dont want to own their own.
its a fixed price, if you want something like what youre imagining rent is then you need a cost + margin arrangement or lease at a cheaper rate and pay the rates yourself like most lease and commercial arrangements are.

think of rent as a subscription service and itll make more sense to your feeble old mind 🙂

We did business in different worlds. As a cocky I was a price taker & if I wanted to make money I had to produce better meat or more of it. V2 & his fanbois merely work out how much they want to make & add it to the asking rent.

With a housing shortage there’s no competition & the renter is squeezed dry.

Who uses the councils services? Is it the tenant and his tribe, or is it the absentee landlord? He is an absentee landlord even if he lives across the road.
As a so called cocky you had to pay for the services of the truck driver, the vet the councils who supplied your roading, even the grader driver. How is that different to someone renting? All you did was rent the land and buildings from the bank.

Commercial leases generally pass the costs onto the tenant. Other than ability to collect from dodgy tenants it should be possible to do the same for residential tenancies.
Won’t happen though dodgy tenants are too common.

Only advice I’d give anyone before starting any business is consult an accountant and probably a competent lawyer before beginning. The IRD plays for keeps.

Having wooed the world’s investors, what, if anything, has New Zealand won? Did Christopher Luxon’s guests board their private jets fizzing with enthusiasm for a little country palpably eager to embark on a new national adventure? Or, did they depart in a more sombre mood, disappointed by New Zealanders’ lack of spirit? Will institutions with billions of dollars at their disposal invest them in a country so obviously in a deep funk?
Or will they, like Michael Corleone in Godfather Part II, take note of more than the sales pitch of the gangster asking him to invest in the Mob’s Cuban casinos in 1959?
MICHAEL CORLEONE: I saw a strange thing today. Some rebels were being arrested. One of them pulled the pin on a grenade. He took himself and the captain of the command with him. Now, soldiers are paid to fight; the rebels aren’t.
HYMAN ROTH: What does that tell you?

According to the definition of race currently in use in this country I am Irish. (Approx 9% of my dna qualifies me) Trouble is my 24% germanic stops me from celebrating even though my 32% english tells me not to listen to the bloody krauts. I am so confused.
