I didn’t choose to participate in that nonsense, I had already filled my trolly, emptied my trolly and scanned the items, refilled my trolly and so I just skipped the exit line and left.
I heard her saying “Umm – Excuse me “ as I kept walking and raised the receipt above my head, leaving the store.
You can either trust me to do self-checkout, or you can put your cashiers back in place like it used to be.
• I’m not interested in proving that I did your job for you.
• If you want me to be a cashier with no training then that’s your problem not mine.
• Keep employing young people and give them job opportunities.

I have been told that Staff are not to look in those brown paper bags.
They are supposed to take the word of the customer.
At the worst it will have to be double checked with CCTV which will all take time.

Tried to scan a six pack of cans this arvo , wouldnt work properly until I finally turned pack sideways so it couldn’t scan bottom and a couple of individual can barcodes visible to the side reader at the same time.
Kmart do that here.
They ask to scan my receipt as I go out the door. They don’t look at the receipt or my purchases and there is no attempt to reconcile what I paid for to what I’m taking home.
Even more baffling is the self checkout is in the middle of the store so I walk past a lot of stock that could be added to my purchases before my receipt gets scanned.
It’s madness.
Kmart, Woolworths and Bunnings are all owned by Wesfarmers from Perth.
All are using the same or similar formula.
The myth Bunnings tries to convey is that they are always cheaper.
But they are not.
Sometimes at Bunnings, they will stock check as you leave.
Not sure why they scan, but it could possibly be tied into a camera looking at you.
They don’t do it for no reason.

Their stock is all over the place too. The database can tell you if they have something in store (supposing it hasn’t been pinched) but no one can tell you where it is.
It’s unreasonable to expect too much service from a FMCG store, but no service at all is pretty rank.

When we are in a big town we go to Pak & Sav and I use my sticky card to get a hand held zapper. Pack within the trolly as you go and when finished go to the zapper check out and pay the amount and away you go. Great system.

While I agree with your premise about ‘self-checking’, regrettably there are certain suburbs in the major cities in NZ where full trollies DO go out the door without paying and as a result the stores concerned have had little choice whether or not to check if the items within said trolley/s have in fact been paid for.
On the basis that it’s better to have a blanket check of ‘everyone’ ‘Just in case’, and in the knowledge that by so doing they will at least catch ‘some’ of the thieves, their staff have been instructed to do just that, but be under no illusions, it is not something that the staff-concerned enjoy, especially when the thieves are frequently suntanned, built like bricks and very belligerent….
