Commentators are overreacting to the Māori Party’s plan to game MMP.
Some have said it risks public backlash. Others have said it risks our whole electoral system.
Actually, it’s just bloody clever. It could win the election for Labour and the left.
People have debated this plan for months. No one actually thought the Māori Party would do it. And then, on Sunday, it did.
At its campaign launch, the party openly asked voters to give it only one vote: the candidate vote. Their party votes could go to either Labour or the Greens.
If it works, the strategy will create an overhang in Parliament by giving the Māori Party more seats than it’s entitled to through its total party vote. Which means Parliament would go from 120 MPs to perhaps 121 or 122.
That outcome isn’t unusual. We currently have a Parliament of 123 MPs because, in the 2023 election, the Māori Party won three more electorate seats than its party vote would have entitled it to. In fact, five of the past seven Parliaments have had an overhang.
What’s unusual is the Māori Party targeting it deliberately. And that is what the commentators can’t bear. It’s too brazen. Too obviously cynical.
It’s as if the commentators have erased the image of John Key and John Banks sitting in an Epsom cafe, stitching up a deal just as brazen and cynical. It’s as if they’ve forgotten every other time that National has told its voters to give the Epsom seat to Act so the minor party would be in Parliament. Which was – just like the Māori Party trying to engineer a win for the left – the National Party ensuring a win for the right.
Parties have been gaming MMP since 1999, when Helen Clark basically told Labour voters to give their candidate votes to Jeanette Fitzsimons in Coromandel so the Greens would be assured of entry to Parliament, and those voters did as they were told.
So, given we’ve had 27 years of manipulation, will voters really react any more harshly to the Māori Party than they did to the Epsom cup-of-tea deal?
It’s more likely that voters will moan but move on, in the same way that centre-right voters had to moan and move on when Winston Peters broke the accepted MMP norm of putting the bigger party into power by choosing Jacinda Ardern in 2017.
This will become just another growth spurt in what commentators love to call the maturation of MMP.
There are, though, some who have warned that the greatest risk is the counter move this might provoke. They are right.
If the centre right were as cunning and bold as the Māori Party, it would try to engineer its own – and even bigger – overhang. It can be done very simply. National voters would need to keep their candidate vote with National, but give their party vote to either NZ First or Act. That way, National could win more electorate MPs than its party vote entitled it to.
The NZ Initiative think tank has calculated that, if 11% of National voters did that, it would secure the centre-right parties the majority required to win. If 25% of National voters did that, the centre-right would win with 69 seats in a super Parliament of 132.
That’s the gamble for the Māori Party. It might be pulling the trigger only to have it backfire.
But will it tarnish the reputation of MMP? No more than it already has been through nearly three decades of brazen gaming.

A major El Niño event is now underway over the tropical Pacific Ocean.
The current sea surface temperatures being recorded in the central equatorial Pacific and reversing trade winds suggest this could be the strongest El Niño in the entire instrumental record (1850-present). It could even rival the Great El Niño of 1789 -93 which caused several failed Asia monsoons and changed earth’s weather patterns for years. There is no written evidence of the conditions experienced in NZ, but conditions and temperatures recorded by ships in the tropical South Pacific were colder and drier than usual in the period between 1789 to 1793.
It remains unknown what this event’s impact will be on the upper North Island for the upcoming Spring and Summer as past very strong El Niño events have varied in modern times. But it will most likely feel much different to the La Niña flooding rains and ex-tropical storms of the last few years.

Governing Outcome: National and ACT would hold 64 out of 122 seats. They would successfully cross the 62-seat threshold required for a majority, completely avoiding the three-party coalition deal with NZ First. [1, 2]

If the electorate loophole were completely removed, any party under 8% would be stripped of proportional representation. Te Pāti Māori (3.08%) would lose its list allocations but keep its 6 electorate seats as independent additions. [1, 2]

Governing Outcome: National and ACT would command 66 out of 126 seats, securing a very comfortable and clear right-wing majority.

Nowadays with refrigeration readily available we could phase out the use of nitrates but for one small point.
We eat with our eyes.
Bacon without nitrates in the brine mix will taste much the same but it will have a fawn/grey colour instead of pink. Ditto with ham. We see the same effects when we’re served up silverside & the grey areas show where the brine pump missed but the meat’s still edible.
It is true that healthy vegetables like spinach and kale etc contain essential nitrates for Nitric Oxide production. It is possible though to eat too much as many of these plants also contain oxalates which are toxic. Beetroot leaves are particularly bad.
And celery.
But nitrates or nitrites are not intrinsically carcinogenic. It’s when they’re cooked in association with amino acids that nitrosamine is formed & this is a very potent carcinogen.
