Very sad to say but the World.

I have travelled fairly extensively, 44 countries, in all forms of transport – tour bus, car, camper van (2 years Europe) and tour biked in 7 countries.
Loved every minute of it – except when my laptop was stolen out of my backpack in City of Thieves – Prague. (they had a section desk for Visitors to report stolen goods.)

I used to travel to Australia quite extensively, perhaps almost once a year at times, and would just roll on down to Christchurch Airport and go, no hassles, no 3 hour reporting time, no searching, no hassles.

Our last time overseas was to Germany 2015, travelling back to Munich from Berlin by train, a terrorist threat and stations closed, in America during the 2005 London Bombings and seeing the reaction of all the young Brits. Have seen the gypsies in action on a number of occasions, been to Birmingham. Been around railway stations.

So basically just cannot be bothered with all the hassle, beginning with the departure procedure. Our passports have run out, our monies are not as free flowing as they used to be – we have a (old) camper van and can quietly spend our time within New Zealand.
Been there – Done that.

In no particular order:

# Tokoroa. A cold, dismal place where the inhabitants & their houses have simply given up. Rumour has it that it hosts the last video rental business on the planet.

# Palmerston North. No-one described it better than John Cleese…..“if you wish to kill yourself but lack the courage to, I think a visit to Palmerston North will do the trick.”
# Kaikohe. Truly dreadful. The main street is lined with fortified buildings semi protected from nightly raids by rebar grills over windows & roller doors. Security cameras attached to every surface except that they’re fakes because the natives steal the real ones. Popular pastimes include bathing in mud, ramming cars into each other & burglary. Meth flogged openly in the street at supermarket prices. No hope, no pride…..relief from the squalor & hopelessness comes in tiny ziplock baggies.

# Wainuiomata. Last refuge for the desperate, the unemployed & solo mothers. People would queue for three days for the opening of a KFC.

# Christchurch. Half a cathedral short of mention in the book of cities lifted out of Victorian Pommieland. Renown for its weekly burning of witches & people falsely accused of paedophilia.

I would suggest many here have built up that huge life experience over many years and are now totally exasperated at what is happening to what was truly a bloody great little country.
Going overseas really puts things in perspective and on return it’s a sigh of relief.
That accumulated experience by the likes of Phil and no doubt others here is invaluable in decision making but that is now carried out by nutters and posers and everything in between.
Guess we have to keep going though and make the most of life.
