majority that it be passed. We recommend all amendments unanimously.”
Note:
Select committees do not pass bills; they vote to approve a report recommending whether a bill should proceed (with or without amendments), based on public feedback.
A majority agreed the recommendation to pass the bill would be sent to the House.
That vote: did not pass the law, did not decide the final outcome, and did not replace a full parliamentary vote.
Why the numbers matter:
There are nine MPs on the Committee: 3 National, 1 ACT, 1 NZ First, 2 Labour, 1 Green, 1 Te Pāti Māori.
National + ACT = 4 votes. The majority recommendation required at least one vote beyond them.

‘Ōtorohanga Kiwi House faces $15k bill after theft and arson spree
Ōtorohanga’s Kiwi House says two deliberate attacks in November caused thousands of dollars in damage and left critical wildlife systems disabled for four days.
Operations manager Julian Phillips told 1News the first incident happened in the early hours of November 6, when an offender destroyed the centre’s external meter board, disabling power and security systems before climbing onto the roof and stealing a specialist digital bridge.
The theft affected heating, ventilation, humidity control, after-hours monitoring for nocturnal habitats, EFTPOS systems, and an electric fence surrounding the park and its enclosures, putting the birds at risk.
It took two days to repair and another two days to bring systems back online.
“We were basically offline for four days during our busy season,” he said.
“Having said that, our visitors were amazing. They were happy to shoot into town and get cash for us.”
Six days later, staff leaving work smelled smoke and discovered the public toilets at the bottom of the park on fire.
Security footage later revealed the same individuals had also tried to start a fire on the rear deck of a meeting room.
“Thankfully the weather prevented it,” Phillips said.
“Otherwise we’d have been in serious trouble.”
The incidents have cost the charity more than $10,000 in repairs and replacement equipment, plus around $5000 in lost income.
“As a charity, that hurts. Every dollar spent fixing this is a dollar taken away from conservation work, animal care and improving habitats,” Phillips said.
“It’s deeply disheartening to be forced to spend scarce funds on fixing infrastructure that should never have been damaged or stolen in the first place.”
Despite setbacks, Phillips said the centre’s commitment to wildlife care remained “unwavering”.
“Nothing’s going to stop us doing what we do. We’re incredibly grateful to our community and for the support shown during this period. It’s that support of our community and our extended stakeholders actually enables us to continue our work, even in the face of challenges like this.”
Sergeant Gary Anderson said police had received reports of both incidents.
Initial inquiries into the burglary had so far been unsuccessful.
“Should new information come to light, police will take further appropriate action.”
The two youths allegedly responsible for setting off the fireworks behind the deck fire were believed to have been involved in an arson that took place at the public toilets in Ōtorohanga on the same day, Anderson said.
They had been referred to Youth Aid.

”Slovakia will not be part of any military loan for Ukraine, and we reject further financing, including from the resources of the Slovak Republic, of military needs,” Fico told reporters on Friday.
At the EU summit in Brussels, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever was among those who raised objections to tapping the Russian assets, with support from Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, Hungary’s Viktor Orban, Slovakia’s Fico, and the Czech Republic’s Andrej Babis.
Orban, Fico, and Babis reportedly put forward an option for EU members to provide joint debt for Ukraine instead – exempting their countries from the plan but also pledging not to veto it.

Upon being summoned to the Royal Chambers to address this incident, Horatio informed the King and Queen that only a special saliva, if applied for four hours, would cure this type of itch, and that tests had shown that, among all of the citizens of the kingdom, only the saliva of Nick would work as the antidote to cure the itch.
The King, eager to help his Queen, quickly summoned Nick to their chambers. Horatio then slipped Nick the antidote for the itching powder, which he put into his mouth, and for the next four hours, Nick worked passionately on the Queen’s large and magnificent breasts. The Queen’s itching was eventually relieved, and Nick left satisfied and hailed as a hero.
Upon returning to his chamber, Nick found Horatio demanding his payment of 1000 gold coins. With his obsession now satisfied, Nick couldn’t have cared less knowing that Horatio could never report this matter to the King and with a laugh told him to get lost.
The next day, Horatio slipped a massive dose of the same itching powder into the King’s underwear. The King immediately summoned Nick….

It was dark & stormy night in deepest Southland when a young lad decided to visit a friend. Not far from his destination his car broke down & it began to rain so heavily that he couldn’t see his hands in front of him. He walked for as long as he could but the rain became too much to bear. He found a tree & stood beneath it hoping for a lift.
Hours went by & he was beginning to give up hope. It was a quiet road indeed that he had found himself on. The next town wasn’t for miles so he’d have to stay the night under this tree if he didn’t find a ride.
Just as things were looking grim, he catches a light moving slowly towards him. He’s saved!
Desperate for a ride, he jumps into the vehicle once it stops for him. Once in, he turned to the driver seat to say thanks & only then did he realise that the then moving car had no driver. The rain was so heavy, he couldn’t even hear the sound of the engine as the car slowly continued its journey.
The lad was too scared to move, too afraid to jump out of the car & run. Seeing the car was coming to a sharp bend that lead down to dark water he began to pray for his life. He was sure the ghost car would go off the road & into the river, where he would surely drown!
Right before the car made it to the bend, a shadowy hand reached in through the driver side window & turned the wheel, guiding the car around the bend, thus avoiding a wet demise for the lad. Just as silently, the hand disappeared through the window & the hitchhiker was alone again.
Paralysed with fear, the lad watched the hand reappear every time they reached a bend. Finally, scared to near death, he’d had all he could take & jumped out of the car & ran towards the first town he could find.
Wet & in shock, he went into the nearest pub & told everybody about his supernatural experience. A silence enveloped the room & everybody got goosebumps when they realised the guy was telling the truth about the strange car & the ghostly hand that guided it on its way.
Just then, two men walked into the bar. They were dripping wet & as they took off their rain gear, they looked around the room. Their eyes came to rest on the hitchhiker. They pointed at him ominously & he feared they were ghosts come to get him.
“Look!” said one of the men, “There’s the idiot who jumped into our car when we were pushing it in the rain.”
