Well, I beg to differ. What you are saying shows how out of touch with the reality of the employment market is. The employment market relies on business. Other than the govt and local government, there is only businesses that employ. While we all know where you live, nothing happens that’s not the case in the major areas.
You would have to have your head in a sandbag to not know that the business world in NZ is about as sad as you can get.
Look around, read up a bit look at the stats.

Something that lots seem not to understand is that not everyone is a rocket lab scientist, not everyone can afford to pay $5k to get a license to drive a truck, indeed, that might not be their desire.
Its easy to sit there on a keyboard with life well behind you and attack those who have lost their employment. A life where working opportunities were mainly of a physical nature, where employers were encouraged to employ youth and where the costs of doing so were not prohibitive.

Expecting employers to hire young people out of school, with no experience in work, still grappling with their youth and adolescence and all those things, all the while having no idea about what they need to know nor how to do anything much, having older staff training them and yet getting paid full rates that took that older person some years to obtain is patiently stupid. fucking mad if you ask me. They have been consigned to the dustbin of life by those who promote that crap.
Think for a minute, you are old enough to remember when young people worked in grocery stores, supermarkets and a thousand other places. Who does that now? Self-checkouts, online services that are often via robotic systems and so on.Imported items because its done cheaper in India, China and so on.
If having youth rates encouraged many employers to add just one person to their staff, we wouldn’t have a problem and we would be training better citizens.
Education is not for everyone, and now, with the age of AI, even less. Stop and think for a moment of what has happened to the Accounting industry. Once you had an accountant because you needed them to tell you all about your financials. Today, many run their own. coming to lawyers as we speak.
What new jobs are created?
The issue is far more complicated than berating young people.
That’s actually an abuse of them and shows a critical lack of any leadership.
Sure there’s some that won’t, but there’s lots that are lost on the way to working.

With Govt there is no alternative but lowering or removing interactions becomes something to search for – I see tradies are now looking at capping their turnover at $79,000 to avoid adding Gst to invoices and the bureacratic return/payment system – result less tradies charging more whilst imptoving their personal lifestyle with less work, more profit lower productivity and less IRD interaction, a winner for the tradie not so the cutomer or IRD. Acceptable service is becoming the domain of the small business were the owners are the employees who do understand the value of a cusotmer and the necessity of delivering the customers requirementss.
One of the biggest problems in this country at the moment. In the good old days if you wanted the big bucks you had to prove you were good. Now days they just walk through the door and expect it. I personally believe there should be no minimum wage or if there is it should be set much lower. All of our staff are on well over the minimum rate, they work hard and are well looked after as it should be.
Have been arguing for no minimum wage for years. A minimum wage distorts everything.
Free market would mean there would be jobs for starters who could learn how then work up through the grades or levels. If your good people soon pick up on it and offer more.
Having to pay these RSE workers $30 plus an hour is ridiculous.

A lot of the trades are getting out of hand with their hourly rates as well. Had a boat builder doing some work on my boat the other day – nothing complex, could have done it myself if I had time. $140 per hour plus gst of course. He operates out of a van so virtually no overheads.

RETAIL STUNTED
Updated data from the Worldline payments network shows consumer spending up +0.3% in October from the same month a year ago, far lower than can be accounted for by inflation. Only Nelson and Otago(Queenstown-Lakes) have spending rising more than inflation. Auckland is down -0.1%, Wellington is down -3.7% and Christchurch is up just +0.6%.
TAX TAKE TELLS THE TALE
The Crown accounts for the first three months to September 2025 were released today and they confirmed how weak the local economy is. For example, gross payroll tax deductions rose only +2.3% in September from the same month a year and that it the lowest rise since early 2012. These toals include activity from pay gains, employment gains, and hours worked. For most of the past decade these gains have easily exceeded +5% as workers got pushed into higher tax brackets as a further embellishment to tax flows. Not happening now and that is unusual. GST tax collections show the same effect. For the first time in decades, this tax flow has topped out and recently started to fall. So it will be no surprise to know that the September OBEGAL deficit came in larger than forecast, even from the September BEFU Forecast. Not by a lot in government terms but it was -$249 mln Sept-actual vs Sept-forecast. If they miss that much in one month, it doesn’t bode well for the upcoming year…..
