Anything over 110 squares meters is luxurious, in my perspective.
Ours started at 84m and we have extended as and when we could afford it now it 210m including covered deck and it feels about right.
our house is 270m² and feels small with wife, 2kids and 4 dogs! except for a brief stint in a tiny home almost 20yrs ago ive lived mostly in larger 3 or 4 bedroom houses/homesteads.
mates 110m² house feels like a shoebox to me although if we had no kids id be fine living in a house that size. mrs sb would like smaller house tho cuz big house = big mess/cleaning.
The average three bedroom Keith Hay/Beazley or equivalent house is about 1000 sq/ft or 90 sq/m. The second house we owned was a nearly new 3 bdrm build on 25 acres. We were spoiled for room outdoors but a paltry 870sq/ft (80sq/m) living space with two school age kids & a baby was well short of luxurious.
On the bright side we owned it & it was a stepping stone to something far better.

Almost $500,000 in large declarable donations has already flooded into the New Zealand political landscape for 2026 as election year kicks off.
It’s an earlier start compared to the 2023 election year.
The first hefty donation started with Pure Advantage founder Phillip Mills, of Les Mills gyms. On January 8 he donated $50,000 to the Opportunity Party – newly rebranded from The Opportunities Party (TOP). Mills in 2023 donated $50,000 to both the Greens and Labour.
Mills told Interest.co.nz he was interested in environmental issues and particularly dealing with climate change.
“I’m basically supporting anybody who is properly dealing with issues that need to be dealt with around climate change,” he said. He planned to also donate to the Greens and Labour.
Mills’ 2026 donation was followed by three separate donations from Auckland building and civil engineering businessman Michael Sullivan, who donated $200,000 in total across the government coalition parties.
On January 20, Sullivan donated $50,000 to NZ First, $50,000 to ACT and $100,000 to National.
Sullivan donated $50,000 each to ACT and National in mid-2023. Sullivan was contacted but preferred not to comment for this story.
A day later on January 21, Aucklander Mary O’Brien donated $22,333 to the Labour Party.
Earlier this month Van Den Brink Karaka Limited, and Zuru Toys founder Nicholas Mowbray, each separately donated $100,000 to ACT.
Mowbray donated $50,000 in June 2023 and $100,000 in March 2023 to ACT ahead of the last election.
Large donations above $20,000 must be declared to the Electoral Commission within 20 working days during the 2026 election year, up to a day before the election.
The 2023 election year only saw large donations of $20,000 and above come in from February 22, the Electoral Commission confirmed.
That period was particularly turbulent – former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announcing her resignation and the election date on January 19, before now Labour leader Chris Hipkins took over as prime minister a week later.
In non-election years, donations, including large donations, are declared in annual returns, with the 2025 batch scheduled for release in April.
Prior to 2023, the donation declaration threshold was $30,000 from a single donor in a 12-month period.

January exports were up +2.6% while imports rose +1.6%, resulting in a January merchandise trade deficit of -$519 mln. That was lower than the -$549 mln in January 2025 and half the -$1.064 bln in January 2024. Exports to China were down -7%, to Australia up +20%, to the US unchanged, to the EU up +16% and to Japan up +11%. Imports from China were up +24%, from the EU up +5.6%, from Australia down -8.1%, from the US down -17%, and from South Korea up +36%. We haven’t run a January trade surplus since 2016. They were common from 2009 to 2016.

Auckland Transport says in 2025, Aucklanders made 88.7 million trips on public transport, 70.2 mln on a bus, 13.6 mln on a train, and 4.3 mln on a ferry. Unfortunately basic ridership has flat-lined since September 2024, and is still -14% lower than the peak of 103.6 mln in the year to February 2020.

The announcement followed a Sunday Star-Times column by Andrea Vance, who called for public organisations and politicians to depart from the platform.
