The political rollercoaster ride of former East Coast MP Kiri Allan has been put into words by the woman herself in a book titled Go Hard Or Go Home. She spoke with Gisborne Herald reporter Anne-Marie de Bruin.
Kiri Allan was looking to exit politics, but it turned out to be a louder departure than planned.
The East Coast MP for Labour resigned from all her portfolios, including Justice Minister, after being charged and taken into custody following a car crash in Wellington in July 2023.
“God, if I wanted to be dramatic about it all, it took a rather loud exit, but at the end of the day, it was really liberating and I’m happy that I left,” she told the Gisborne Herald.
“At the end of the day I wanted to leave politics. I didn’t want to be there in the role that I was [in], and I’d spoken to a lot of colleagues about that.”

A fortnight ago, you heard from Stephen Franks describing his 15-month ordeal under a Law Society investigation.
The complaint wasn’t brought by anyone he’d worked with. It was brought by six strangers who disagreed politically – and who wanted to weaponise the regulatory apparatus to silence and punish Stephen for his work.
His case is unusual only because it became public – what happened to him is becoming depressingly routine.

We’ve been campaigning on this subject for years.
Professional regulators were set up to ensure consumer protection and safeguard the public against incompetent or dishonest practitioners.
They are increasingly being used to police what professionals believe – what they’re sanctioned for saying off duty, and what they’re required to affirm on duty.
The principle is the same whether the position someone is being required to affirm is one you’d happen to agree with or not.
A licensing body has no business deciding what its members must say or think outside the bounds of their professional competence.
Most of what we see is the public end of this – the tribunal cases, the named complaints, the people willing to put their hand up.
The vast majority of what’s actually happening never reaches the public.
People are bound by settlement clauses, or simply fear of further professional consequences for speaking out.
What’s visible is the tip of the iceberg.
This isn’t a new concern for us.
We’ve made submissions to the Nursing, Medical, Architects, Teaching, and Veterinary Councils.
We’re currently supporting Cath Simpson, a nurse before the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal over posts on X, and have supported a number of other professionals in similar circumstances.
And Stephen has since drafted the Regulated Professions Neutrality Bill, a serious attempt to put statutory limits on what regulators can do with vague conduct rules.
We support the Bill and the principle behind it.
But legislation alone won’t shift a culture.
